Crete is one of the world’s top olive oil producers and has many recognised olive oils and olives.
Look for Cretan oil marked "Chania Crete", "Kolymvari Chania", "Apokoronas Chania" and olives marked "Throumpa Abadias Rethymno Crete". Olive oil goes with everything! Most foods in Crete either contain or are cooked in olive oil.

bread, Cretan rusk and pastries

In contrast to the buttery bread products of other countries, in Crete bread or rusk is kneaded from a mixture of flours (barley, wheat, rye). Traditionally, yeast is used for fermentation and this gives it a slightly acidic taste.
Modern pastries come in many different flavours, and it is worth trying sweet or savory buns: multigrain, with raisins, with olive, with sesame, stuffed with cheese and much more.
