Fish

Crete, and especially Chania is one of the best places to try fish and seafood dishes. Steamed mussels are a well-known appetizer in the city. Be on the look-out for taverns and restaurants serving sea urchins. Sea urchin eggs are the caviar of Crete. Difficult to collect, sea urchins are a species that needs protection from overfishing. Their unique texture, color and aroma are the essence of the Cretan sea.

Do you prefer grilled fish like sardines or shrimp? Traditional liokafta (sun-dried) like octopus liokafto, appetizers in vinegar like anchovy vinegar, smoked appetizers like smoked mackerel, the list is deliciously endless.

Meat

In Crete you will find many recipes with apaki, a fine pork cold meat, smoked, with vinegar and herbs. It has a strong taste and is very aromatic so it is an excellent appetizer. In the taverns of the mountain villages, it is worth trying boiled or grilled meat as well as the traditional recipes with rabbit, lamb or goat.
