A walk to the lighthouse on a Monday afternoon in November 2016.
Monday the 21st of November is a local holiday as we celebrate the patron saint of Chania, Panagia Trimartyri (Virgin of the Three Martyrs).
We started our day with visit to Verekinhtos Arts & Crafts Village (Βερέκυνθος) in Souda and then drove down to the old town. Very few people were in the harbour by that time and this made parking very easy.
We walked across the promenade all the way up to the Sailing Club (Ι.Ο.Χ. - Ιστιοπλοϊκός Όμιλος Χανίων, Hania Sailing Club) and then decided to walk a bit further to reach the light house.
This is an easy walk recommended for all visitors including young children, with an average duration of one hour, one way (gps tracking info is to follow).
Hint: This is an afternoon walk (summer or winter). If you go in the morning either go very very early and have lots of water with you or be prepared to get very hot!
Mitsos BBQ is a well established taverna at Kounoupidiana (Akrotiri). We stopped at the taverna one warm Saturday afternoon, after we went to Kalathas beach for a swim.
We started our day with a short tour around Apokoronas and then went for a midday run in the narrow streets of Kefalas. We spend quite some time looking at the old, natural stone buildings, the memorials, the building which currently houses the "Environmental Education Center of Vamos", the view over Souda bay, and we had a great time on the playground at the square of Kefalas. Then, from Kefalas we drove back to Chania, through Almirida and on to the national road. We decided to go to Akrotiri so we combine swimming at Kalathas beach with a visit to Mitsos bbq in Kounoupidiana.
We ordered both spit roasted and grilled steaks which were excellent but the dish that made the best impression to me was the salad. We usually have Greek or Cretan salad but this "spinach salad" on the menu looked interesting. Fresh, raw spinach, arugula, greens, apaki (smoked meat), dried figs and an olive oil- vinegar dressing, are just some of the ingredients that make this salad unique.
If you decide to visit Mitsos bbq it is best to make a reservation or go early enough, as it gets very busy most of the time. Yamas!
Notis beach at Agioi Apostoloi is a place I would recommend anyone to visit.
It's a 45min walk from the old town and about 15min by car or bike. It is a great place for a morning or evening run, a coffee or a beer. The 4 bays are protected from the wind so that you can go swimming even on a windy day. The sandy beach is ideal for tennis, football, frisbee, sunbathing, walking, running, yoga and much more. The beach is also very suitable for families. Children can play safely at the beach while adults can have a great time resting, swimming, reading a book or just enjoying the sun and the view.
